The Mental Health Foundation is hosting a special event to celebrate and raise awareness about its Amaan project, a three year programme to promote mental health and wellbeing among asylum seeking and refugee women in Glasgow.
In this event chaired by Christina McKelvie MSP, you can hear from facilitator Amal Azzudin and some of the women who participated in the Amaan project. We will also be launched a new resource booklet for asylum seeking and refugee women, which formed a major part of the project. Entertainment and refreshments will be provided and there will be an opportunity for guests to network with others who are interested in developing work in this area.
Run in partnership with the Scottish Refugee Council and Freedom for Torture, the Amaan project was developed out of research which identified mental health problems for asylum seeking and refugee women as a major public health issue. There is also a wealth of evidence indicated that mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety, are extremely prevalent among these women and it was clear that work was required to achieve positive and sustainable change.
Participants played a key role in directing the project, which involved a programme of arts-based Community Conversations, delivering awareness-raising training to public services and co-authoring the peer-led self-help resource booklet, which we are now delighted to be in a position to launch.
The Amaan Resource Launch takes place on Friday 9th October from 1-4pm at Merchants House, Merchants Hall, 1st Floor, 7 West George Street, Glasgow G2 1EG. To RSVP, email events.scotland@mentalhealth.org.uk, or phone 0141 572 0125 for more details.
