Film submissions are now open for the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival 2024, which sees the return of our popular International Film Awards.

Showcasing the very best mental health themed films from around the world, the awards ceremony and screening programme will be back at the CCA: Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow this October. The festival will also feature additional screenings in cinemas and community venues.

Submission guidelines

We are calling on filmmakers to submit films that address mental health and the various ways this can be understood or reflected. Our programme is renowned for championing work by filmmakers with lived experience of mental health problems, exploring how film can challenge stigma and perceptions, and raising awareness about inequalities and mental health.

We invite films that draw attention to personal stories and raise awareness about specific mental health problems, but we also welcome innovative and diverse perspectives on mental health and wellbeing. Films made by – or in collaboration with – communities affected by mental health, and films by first-time or aspiring filmmakers, are very welcome.

Our theme for SMHAF 2024 is ‘In/Visible’ and we encourage submissions that relate to this in some way. However, this is not required and we will screen work exploring a variety of subject matter and in a broad range of genres and styles.

How to submit

Please visit our FilmFreeway page to find full details of the competition and submit your film. We recommend that you read the guidelines carefully before submitting. There is a submission fee to help us cover the costs of running the competition but we offer a waiver code to people who find this a barrier to submitting.

If you have any questions about the submission process or anything else about our film programme, please email us at smhaf@mentalhealth.org.uk. The submission deadline is Thursday 6 June 2024.
