d. Myrid Carten (Ireland, 2024) 1h 21m

An unforgettable and evocative first feature from Irish visual artist Myrid Carten as she turns the camera on the complex and often painful dynamics of her relationship with her alcoholic mother.

When Carten receives unsettling news that her mother, Nuala, has mysteriously disappeared, she returns to Ireland to look for her. During her time at home, she finds herself caught up in the hidden conflicts and deeply rooted traumas that have haunted her family for generations.

The documentary masterfully weaves together intimate phone recordings, home movie footage, performative elements, and a close handheld camera style, offering a raw and nuanced look into the intricacies of a mother-daughter relationship.

It’s a confronting and relentless work that manages to draw moments of love and catharsis while navigating the messiness of inherited trauma.

This screening will be followed by a conversation with filmmakers Miranda Stern and Isaac Knights-Washbourn and Claire Wadsworth from Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol & Drugs discussing some of the themes and issues raised. In collaboration with SDI.
