Between the Notes is a gentle invitation to pause, listen, and reflect. This special event marks the launch of a new artist-designed public piano for North Lanarkshire, brought to life in its first outing by internationally acclaimed musician Karen MacIver.
Inspired by the theme of Comfort and Disturb, this live performance combines music and classical dance to explore how sound and silence, harmony and discord, can echo our inner states of balance and imbalance. This evocative encounter will be a space for connection, reflection, and wellbeing, demonstrating the symbiotic relationship between the two artforms.
Karen MacIver has dedicated a major part of her career encouraging excellence in music for dance. She has worked with most of the UK’s major ballet companies, including over 20 years with Scottish Ballet. She now coaches emerging musicians through a unique postgraduate Master of Music programme, delivered in partnership with Scottish Ballet and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Alongside her work in Scotland, Karen has been a contract musician for Birmingham Royal Ballet and continues to perform with Houston Ballet. Her innovative work in the dance studio is recognised internationally through her acclaimed work, The Art of Class.
This event is part of the Music in the Museum programme, produced by North Lanarkshire Council Arts Development. Following this event, the piano be open to the public at Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life, where visitors can play, enjoy performances, and be inspired by the artwork.
