Feed is an arts-based project that promotes inclusive, sustainable approaches to infant feeding and public space. Working with cultural venues, public health teams, artists and communities, we want to create opportunities for people to share their experiences and challenge negative social attitudes towards human milk and mothering.

Feed has been developed by Elaine Speight, as part of In Certain Places, a public art research project based at the University of Central Lancashire, in collaboration with Corridor8 and Textbook Studio.

Part of the project is a touring work, called the Feeding Chair. The paintings on the chair’s back and exterior are by Jade de Montserrat. On a tablet are audio works by artists Krissi Musiol, Nicola Singh and Magda Stawarska, together with videos about infant feeding, gender and public space. The work challenges negative attitudes towards feeding in public space and encourages conversations about care, vulnerability, relationships and human milk.

You are welcome to take a seat and explore the content on the tablet. Those involved in the project have selected books and zines you may like to read.

We especially invite parents and carers to breast, chest or bottle feed their baby – to take this space and take your time.
