Kaleidoscope is a public exhibition of artworks by Black and Minority Ethnic women in Dundee, created through a series of workshops with How It Felt, Amina MWRC and DIWC. The exhibition explores how we perceive ourselves as part of our physical, geographical and cultural communities.
Like a kaleidoscope, it brings together different experiences, identities and perspectives to create a constantly changing picture of community. On display during Black History Month, and exploring themes of belonging, mental health, faith and friendship, the exhibition reflects on the meaning of “community”, and the multiple layers of care, connection and shared experiences that help build supportive networks.
The artworks invite viewers to explore the following questions: What do you bring to your community? How do you see yourself and those around you? What or who has helped you throughout your life?
In a climate where negative narratives around diversity are gaining traction, Kaleidoscope aims to demonstrate our interconnectedness and the inherent, and ever-evolving beauty of inclusive, multicultural communities. It invites each of us to reflect on how a community is created – what makes us feel like we belong, what we contribute, and how we can support each other.
