UK Premiere
Five people who hear voices take part in an innovative form of therapy, where a psychiatrist speaks both about and directly with their voices. Exploring who the voices are, what they want and how they relate to past experiences, the sessions open paths towards greater insight and acceptance.
At first, the voices resist, belittle and undermine, revealing the distress and fear they can cause. As dialogue develops, connections emerge with trauma, isolation and identity, challenging stigma and perceptions about inner voices and the people who hear them.
Maasja Ooms’ documentary thoughtfully examines these themes, capturing both the destructive impact that these experiences can have and the resilience involved in navigating them.
Winner of the IDFA Award for Best Dutch Film in 2025, My Word Against Mine is a powerful, hopeful and vividly cinematic portrait of resilience, trauma and the human mind.
Includes a post-screening discussion with Dirk Corstens, the psychiatrist featured in the film, and representatives from Hearing Voices Network Dundee (the HaVeN).
Co-presented with Hearing Voices Network Dundee.
