Shoulder brings together visual art created over 18 months by members of art for wellbeing group, aimed at men. Through learning and exploring various media and techniques, participants developed a supportive, trusting and non-judgemental space. This exhibition reflects their individual journeys and celebrates the role of creativity and community in healing.

“It has been a pleasure to lead this diverse group and poignant to witness the community blossom with the mutual support and encouragement the members have given each other. I have tried to gently nurture individual skills, talent and areas of interest whist also introducing the group to a variety of techniques, mediums and approaches in an environment that is free of pressure, emphasising that the journey is more important than the destination.” – Lead Artist Fiona Hermse

Quotes from Participants:

“My favourite type of Art is watercolour landscapes depicting peaceful scenes of mountains, rivers, lochs and glens. In my paintings I try to capture quiet moments in nature and bring calmness and relaxation into my life and to anyone who sees my art.” – Alan Hamilton

“I am 55 years old with mental and physical health issues. I find art is very helpful when trying to relax and keep my mind active. I am influenced by M.C. Escher, Monet, James Pryde (no relation!) and Van Gogh.” – James Pryde

“I enjoy the concentration required for me to create a drawing or a painting. Your mind is occupied in the process, cutting out any thoughts of any problems you may have. I find trying to create a picture extremely difficult since most of my time has been occupied with scientific material, so trying to create something artistic is new for me.” – George McGuire

“I stopped painting or drawing at age 16 after an art teacher said “You wont make a living from it”. After retiring I joined an oil painting class as a hobby then discovered acrylic painting. Painting in a group helps mindfulness and social contact” – Robert Davie

“I am pursuing a career in games development while art is a casual hobby. I primarily practice traditional sketching with graphite pencils, focusing on lifelike shading. I also have some interest in digital art and occasionally paint with acrylic and watercolour paints.” – Stephen Gault

“Hi I’m Patrick. I like Animals :-)” – Patrick Colquhoun
