Join us for the exhibition opening of the Art of Family Life, with halal food and poetry!
Through oral histories, audio-visual works and community gathering, the Art of Family Life reflects the creativity, joys and struggles of intergenerational refugee communities who have settled in Glasgow. This sensitive exhibition and events programme has been developed with community members over a two-year period across Glasgow, exploring intangible cultural heritage, belonging, listening and wellbeing.
At the exhibition opening, we’ll hear live readings from Questioning Calm Within Our Monday Morning Family, a new dialogical poetry publication developed collaboratively this summer.
Over six weeks, artist and cultural heritage practitioner Mia Gubbay collaborated with Nina, Fifi, Ameena, Foroogh, Ghanima, Fakhriya, Farhat and S to explore experiences, memories and histories. This space on a Monday morning became “family away from family”, where family was understood as a space of care, not only blood relationships.
Listen Gallery
Listen Gallery C.I.C is an artist-run, non-profit sound arts gallery and communal listening space based in Glasgow. They create spaces for listening through creative projects, such as workshops, performances, exhibitions, screenings, and other sound-focused projects. Their aim is to make sound art accessible to everyone and to use listening as a way to create, collaborate, reflect, and grow together.
Mia Gubbay
Mia Gubbay is a cultural heritage practitioner, curator and artist with a background in co-production, oral history and decolonial practice. Her work focuses on creative forms of facilitating conflict, healing and repair, the careful holding of historical and present experiences of migration and drastic change and the collective re-imagining of place. Mia also works to address structural inequity within museums and galleries.
