Join us for the launch of Home Cooking, halal food and a celebration of food storytelling, as part of our Art of Family Life exhibition!

Through oral histories, audio-visual works and community gathering, the Art of Family Life reflects the creativity, joys and struggles of intergenerational refugee communities who have settled in Glasgow. This sensitive exhibition and events programme has been developed with community members over a two-year period across Glasgow, exploring intangible cultural heritage, belonging, listening and wellbeing.

Home Cooking is a new food and oral history publication developed collaboratively by Luna Issa and a group of women this Summer. Cooking and food-sharing is such a communal kind of connection. We cook to nourish our loved ones, to introduce ourselves to others through dishes, and to preserve parts of our identity that are important to us. Cooking can also be vulnerable. Dishes we share can be representations of ourselves and sharing these can be a special way of communicating with and connecting to others.

Over six weeks, Luna and the group shared cooking sessions that explored ideas of connection – to home, to ourselves’, and to each other – through recipe-sharing and food storytelling. By cooking together in a gentle environment, having conversations around the role of food in connecting to ‘home’, and sharing recipes with each other, they explored how cooking can present ways that the idea of ‘home’ is more than a place.
