Elaine Connell: On the Sidelines
For On the Sidelines, midwife Elaine Connell worked with new dads in Glasgow as they navigated the journey into parenthood during an unprecedented global pandemic.
Elaine Connell is a midwife at NHS Lanarkshire who works with Maternal Mental Health Scotland to raise awareness of perinatal mental health through creative projects.
On the Sidelines was an SMHAF Community Commission, funded by the Baring Foundation, in which Elaine worked with new dads in Glasgow as they navigated the journey into parenthood during an unprecedented global pandemic.
Using various creative methods, the project provided a platform for conversations and raised awareness about dad’s mental health and the importance of supporting the whole family.
The project culminated in an exhibition at New Glasgow Society East during SMHAF in May 2022. It included creative writing, photography, digital art and printmaking produced by new fathers over the course of the project.
