Name: John McCaig

Years: 1970s – Present

As former Deputy Government of HM Prison Barlinnie, John was responsible for bringing Nemo Arts, a mental health arts organisation, in to the prison.

Faced with misconceptions from the public and the press, Johns talks about the challenges he faced, as well as the many successes of the arts groups ran by Nemo Arts and the prison staff.

Excerpts:

“I mean, staff and prisoners called each other by their first name, which was unheard of at the time. And they used the arts in the special unit in the seventies.”

“They couldn’t get this guy to come out from behind his door. He just would not come out, he wouldn’t mix, he wouldn’t socialise. And there they had him out performing, working in a group.”
