A photographic exhibition exploring creativity, connection and the quiet satisfaction of making something by hand.
The exhibition grew from a dedicated silver ring-making workshop, created for members of local Men’s Shed groups and other men interested in trying a new creative experience. Many participants arrived with little or no previous experience of jewellery making, but through learning traditional metalworking techniques they discovered the pleasure of creating something with their own hands.
Rather than documenting the workshop from the outside, the photographs were created by a photographer and fellow participant, offering an intimate perspective on the experience from within the group. The resulting images capture moments of concentration, conversation and craftsmanship as participants learned new skills and discovered the rewards of making by hand.
Accompanying the photographs are personal reflections from participants, sharing their thoughts on learning a new skill, spending time making alongside others and the sense of achievement that comes from creating something for themselves.
Presented as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival 2026, Reflections: Men, Making and Metal celebrates the role creativity can play in building confidence, encouraging conversation and fostering meaningful connection.
The exhibition is presented in the gallery space at Craft Central, home to the Central Scotland School of Jewellery in Dunblane. Depending on studio activity, visitors may also have the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes at the jewellery school and discover more about the traditional tools, techniques and teaching that inspired the project.
